NARA -Japan

Nara City in Japan! Bowing Deer!

Nara, Japan. It’s probably most famous for its “bowing deer”. I’ve heard stories of the deer walking around, following you around, stealing food and so much more. But it was not what I had expected.

Upon arrival in Nara, we got off the train station and headed to our hotel. It was late in the evening when we got to town so we took a cab to our hotel. We stayed in the “oldest” hotel in the deer park. More of a hostel but, incredibly well taken cared for.

Due to Covid-19 restrictions, the town was still sparse of people as the borders were still closed. That left US and about a 1000 deer in the immediate area. It was an overwhelming yet unforgettable experience.

A lot of the shops around the town sell “senbei” which is a cracker that the deer will eat. Most times if you hold it in front of them and bow to them, they will bow back.

Nara as a whole is a gorgeous town. It’s incorporated itself into nature so well, you’d think you’re in some kind of oasis.

We walked down alley ways and took short hikes and everywhere we went there were deer.

If you’re ever headed to that region of Japan, I HIGHLY recommend stopping at Nara. It was a dream come true for our mom and something I personally will never forget.
