Living with DOGS in Japan

Hey everyone and welcome to a “newer” part of our website, the DOG BLOG!

As some of you may or may not know, my brother and I had two dogs that we moved from Hawaii to Japan with. Eventually, they had puppies and now our family expanded from two to ten! Having TWO puppies in Japan had created several challenges for us but now that we have ten, its a whole new story.

For those of you interested in bringing your fur family heres some pointers to keep in mind.

  1. Transportation. A. lot of commercial and public transportation in Japan do not accommodate pets. You may need to either hire a private company or have someone you know drive you around

  2. Vaccinations are requirements, not options and must be done yearly

  3. You must register dogs with the city hall that you move to, for any move

  4. Doggos need to wear a rabies tag and registration tag on them at all times

  5. Leashes are a must even when at some dog parks

  6. Food is different. The amount you get per bag, the options available are all different

  7. Poop must be taken home in most cases

  8. Other dog owners in Japan don’t really “control” their dogs. (This is not for everyone but a lot I come across, they have been like this)

  9. Vet visits are AFFORDABLE!

The list could honestly go on and on, and were still learning new things every day. But those are the items that kind of stuck out to me. But as challenging as having dogs here has been, I wouldn’t change it for the world. Watching them grow, experience new things and just living their lives, is more then I personally need.

The blog will be dedicated to all the info about dogs in Japan and our experiences that I can share with all of you. And of course a place where you can watch our babies grow!

So if you have any questions about dogs in Japan, please feel free to leave me a comment or a question! I’ll be happy to help if I can!
